James Town: First Permanent English Settlement in America. (May 14, 1607) (Encyclopedia Britannica)

Can you imagine what it would be like to live in a place where your neighbors come from several countries, speak different languages, but more importantly, live by their own rules? A similar situation took place here between the early 1600s to late 1800s. This was before our country had a functional system of government like the one we have today. If you look at a one, five, ten, twenty, or one hundred dollar bill, you will notice the picture of a very important American revolutionary on one side of the bill. What do you think they did to become immortal? Why are they considered heroes by the American people? The answer to these questions is that they played a critical (very important) role in the process of transforming America from settlements and colonies ruled by a distant monarch (King) to an independent country ruled by its own people. (People choose their government by electing their leaders like we do today)
